Christine and Dean, like many couples, wanted to incorporate their backgrounds and personality into their wedding day. His family is Greek so it was important to do the ceremony at the cathedral. While Christine initially wanted an outdoor ceremony, she quickly came around: “I absolutely loved all the tradition, beauty and symbolism involved in our ceremony,” she says. The backdrop at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Vancouver was the perfect place to unite their lives.
Since the pair decided to wed in May, an outdoor reception was a bit too risky. Christine’s father is a long-time member at Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vancouver, and her family has a history of hosting weddings at the club. With beautiful views, magnificent food and plenty of windows, Christine and Dean didn’t have to think on the venue before making a decision.
Dean’s mother, Cathy Dounis of Only the Best, is an event decorator, so Christine relied on her connections and advice while planning. “She was very helpful with reminding me about all the things that needed to be done, could be ignored or delegated,” says Christine. She admits she may have been a little too laid-back during the process, but only because she knew she had the best possible person to rely on.
Christine chose a rose gold and cream palette to complement the fresh spring colours at the venue. Cathy suggested potted orchids for centerpieces, so guests could bring them home after the wedding; she also ordered the custom rose-gold sequined table runners. For florals, Christine and Dean worked with Tala Florist.
The couple received some sweet help from Dean’s aunt, Toula Panos, is a cakemaker extraordinaire. She made the four-tier white cake, complete with intricate sugar flower embellishments and beading. A talented seamstress, Toula also made Christine’s veil and headpiece.
During the reception, Christine and Dean opted for a mix of traditional Greek and oldies; for dancing later, they added plenty of 90s hits to the playlist.
“The wedding was really everything we could have hoped for,” says Christine. “The décor, food and vendors were all so amazing… we got a gorgeous sunny May day, and most importantly, you could feel the love in the room from morning to night!”
