Courtney and Steven are self-described city slickers, so they loved the idea of an urban wedding. The result? A modern, urban chic wedding at The Permanent in downtown Vancouver.

“We decided to tackle the wedding together from start to finish, each taking on different aspects of the wedding that were most important to us,” says Courtney. Their vision was to have a city wedding that was modern, fun and romantic.

After selecting The Permanent, Courtney and Steven worked with Bespoke Decor and Our Little Flower Company to add simple décor and florals. “Our colour palette included blush, light greys, cream and navy,” says Courtney.  For décor that translated to candles, wine barrels and mixed metals and for florals, the palette was muted greenery with grey and blush-toned florals. “Our venue played a huge part in bringing the vision of our wedding to life as it felt very city-esque. We wanted to create a space that felt unique and memorable for our guests, rather than choosing a more typical wedding venue.”

For the day of the wedding, Courtney and her bridesmaids pampered themselves with hair and makeup by Denise Elliott, while the groomsmen toured Red Truck Beer Company. The ceremony at The Permanent was lighthearted but tearful, says Courtney.

Then, photographer Sara Rogers (who had scouted Gastown and Railtown for great photo spots) brought the wedding party on what seemed like a historic walking tour of the neighbourhood to capture some memorable and fun photos.

While Courtney and Steven opted for a full dinner, catered by Ritz Catering, they arranged the space in a cocktail seating arrangement to encourage their guests to mingle throughout the evening. They also created a playful seating vignette and photo booth (complete with Bieber) for guests to snap photos at.

To cap the night, the couple brought in McDonald’s cheeseburgers and apple pies for a (nostalgic) late-night snack. The perfect way to prevent a hangover!

Advice from Courtney and Steven

Choose a photographer that you click with

“Your photos will be your lasting memories from your wedding day – it’s important to choose a photographer that you vibe with, and who understands the vision you have for your photos. You’ll be taking hundreds of photos on the day of your wedding, so pick a photographer you feel comfortable with, as it’ll determine how your photos turn out. The relationship we built our photographer, Sara made it easy for us to be ourselves around her, which made our photos feel more natural, candid and authentic to who we are as a couple.”

Hire a day-of wedding coordinator

“Having a day-of wedding coordinator was an absolute necessity in allowing us to enjoy our wedding day. Our coordinator team from DreamGroup pulled our wedding together and even assisted with a thread and needle when Steven’s dress shirt had an emergency button issue. Choose a coordinator who you trust to execute your vision and that gets you as a couple. Having our day of coordinators from DreamGroup there to tie up loose ends (literally) on the big day allowed us to have the wedding of our dreams. Investing in a coordinator is something you will not regret!”

Pick your venue carefully

“When choosing a wedding venue, you often feel pressure to lock in a deposit since venues book up quick. We actually booked three venues before finally selecting the Permanent. When you find the right venue, it will just feel right. Do your research and pick a venue that fits your vision and complements the other vendor decisions you will have to make. When we took the time to relax and make better-informed decisions, we found the perfect venue.”
