Whimsical, magical, enchanted, intimate, serendipitous and powerful.

What was the day like?

I always dreamed of getting married in the mountains on a cloudy day surrounded by the closest, most important people in our lives. Our wedding day was truly the most magical, memorable, emotional day of our lives. Once we got engaged, we planned on eloping and our parents insisted we had a wedding, particularly because lost my brother/best friend nine years ago, and I couldn’t have imagined having a wedding without him.

But I spoke with my parents about ways we could honour him on the day of, so I could feel his presence, and we decided to go ahead and plan the wedding of my drams. Both of our sides of parents have been married for 30-plus years and come from different backgrounds, yet our families share the exact same values—love, gratitude and commitment.

The day started off perfectly with an intimate ceremony and the clouds swept over us. As we said our vows, there was a burst of thunder and some rain, reminded us that my brother was watching over everyone. The intimate ceremony led into the biggest celebration of all time, in the most beautiful setting. The room filled with so much love from the best army of people we are lucky to call our family and best friends. The wedding was everything I ever imagined—it had a magical feel with bright orange fall colours and hints of coral. It was unique and enchanted with the hanging florals and the room was totally transformed into a tropical, boho escape. The night ended with the most magical thunder and lightening storm that the Fraser Valley had ever seen there. It's a day we will never forget.

What inspired the look and feel of the day?

I wanted the wedding to be unique, like no wedding I had seen before. A boho/tropical/Joshua Tree-inspired mood board was what brought this day to life for me.

What was your favourite thing about the wedding?

The ceremony and the storm. Words cannot describe how powerful it was, and how much we knew our lost loved ones were watching over us. Everybody knew.mountain backdrop weddingLaura Olson Photographyjust marriedLaura Olson Photography

mountain bride groomLaura Olson PhotographyWhat was important to you to include in the day?

Honouring our families—our parents as role models, and the people we love that couldn't be there with us. My mom also stood next to me as she is my best friend. I couldn't have imagined getting married without both her and my sister beside me.

What did you splurge on? What did you save on?

We splurged on FLOWERS. I think the pictures said it all... we did not cheap out on them. (Don't tell the groom that though, please!) We skipped wedding favours and the guest book—we decided those weren't a priority for us.

What was the biggest challenge during the planning process?

Deciding on a vision and sticking to it! I didn't want my wedding to be on trend, I wanted it to be different.

What's your advice to other couples in the planning process?

I would say, go with your gut. I purchased these orange and coral candlesticks right when I got engaged and at that point I hadn’t even decided on a colour scheme or theme. I went from white and greenery, the emerald green, to just white… I couldn’t for the life of me decide what I wanted. Little did I know, I knew what I had wanted all along. Make decisions that reflect the personality of you and your partner, nobody else. It’s your day, it should be exactly how you want it to be with the people you want there. Don’t let anyone get in the way of your special day.
