Though Travis and Stephanie both grew up in Michigan, it was in Southern California that they first met... and South Africa where they got engaged after four years of dating. (“It was kind of insane trying to bring a diamond ring to Africa, but that’s my husband,” Stephanie laughs.) So it only seems appropriate that when it came to planning their wedding, they wouldn’t worry about sticking too close to home.

While researching venues, Stephanie stumbled across Squamish’s Sea to Sky gondola and was hooked. “I love the mountains, and with Vancouver right there, it was the best of both worlds,” she says. Planning a wedding from a distance was a challenge, but working two years out left them plenty of time to find vendors they could trust to execute their vision.

And so 80-plus guests made the trek north for the multi-day celebration that would combine elements of Stephanie’s Hindu heritage and their shared American culture. After a henna party and a vibrantly decorated Mehndi welcome dinner at JW Marriott Parq Vancouver (where guests wearing saris and kurtas feasted on Indian food and toasted the couple with speeches), Saturday began with a late-morning ceremony at the top of the Sea to Sky gondola. Stephanie walked down a spectacular suspension bridge aisle before joining Travis on a stunning mountaintop platform overlooking Howe Sound for dual ceremonies—one Hindu, one Christian. Then it was back to the Marriott Parq (beautifully transformed into a bohemian-cool space by Bespoke Decor) to dance the night away.

For all the thoughtful details, when looking back, it’s the big picture the couple remembers. “Don’t stress about small things,” says Stephanie. “It’s about family, love and building a new chapter in your partnership.”

Gorgeous cream-and-blush florals from Koncept Flowerz supplemented the view of Howe Sound, but not much more decor was needed for the stunning mountaintop setting of Stephanie and Travis’s emotional bicultural ceremony.

Stephanie sourced her nude beaded dress for the ceremony in New Delhi, where she had it custom-made. “Because of all the beads it was like 25 pounds!” she says. “I hadn’t ever worn something so traditional.” So that she would have more freedom to dance later on, after the ceremony, she changed into a sleek white gown for the American-style reception.

Stephanie’s father had passed away in 2013, so when her brother surprised her with an emotional speech on his behalf, it moved everyone to tears. To top it all off, he then asked her to do the traditional father-daughter dance with him in their dad's place.

Incorporating the Hindu ceremony into the day was another way to celebrate his memory. “I felt really connected with my father, and it was so special to have my mother and family so involved,” Stephanie says. “That’s the beautiful thing about the Hindu ceremony. It’s about two families really coming together.”

The goal was to give everyone who hadn’t been exposed to Indian culture a real experience, and the colourful and vibrant Mehndi welcome party did just that, with the help of Lux Affairs. Vibrant pink and orange drapery was everywhere at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver, alongside hanging umbrellas, tea-light lamps and, of course, plenty of food.

Travis and Stephanie came to the Friday night Mehndi party dressed to impress in colourful traditional Indian outfits from Mira Bedi. Then, for the Saturday reception, the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver got a fresh, bohemian-modern look thanks to Bespoke Decor, and the couple showed off another glam look with fresh outfits from Fame and Partners and Topman.
