Modern style and casual customs make the wedding of Hayley and Rasmus one to remember

"Rasmus and I got engaged in Venice on June 18th in 2016. Given that we are from different parts of the world (Rasmus from Sweden and myself from Vancouver)—and that we live in London, England—Rasmus left the location of our wedding to me. I already knew the answer was Vancouver given the beauty of the city, that I have several elderly family members who wouldn't be able to travel, and the excitement of Rasmus' family and friends to check out Canada."

"We got some excellent initial advice from my sister-in-law: get a wedding planner... both to make the day more enjoyable but also to relieve the stress of planning an event from abroad. She had heard good things about Petite Pearl Events and so we reached out to set up a Skype call with planner Margot Watt. We were immediately impressed by Margot given her professionalism, energy and creativity and so hired her for both decor and day-of coordination. Margot quickly figured out our style and decor vision, which was 'a modern and elegant garden party' and helped us put together a beautiful plan consistent with our budget. In terms of colours, we chose white, grey, green, copper and hints of blush. We scattered our tables with candles to make the beautiful marquee at Hart House glisten, hired Ghost chairs for a modern touch, chose wild but scaled-back flower arrangements, and finished the tables with beautiful hand-calligraphed name cards and menus in both Swedish and English."

"In addition to modern and elegant decor, we wanted a relaxed and fun outdoor wedding that put our families front and centre. Rasmus and I stayed overnight together at the Shangri-La and, in the morning, he went to get ready with his friends and family while I had my mother, soon-to-be mother-in-law, sister-in-law and nieces to the hotel for hair and make-up. At 11:30 a.m., Rasmus returned with our 'wedding party', which just consisted of our three brothers. My brother was my man of honour and Rasmus' brothers were his best men. Rasmus and I did our first-look photos and then we hopped into a limousine and drove around the city with our amazingly talented photographer Tomasz Wagner to find interesting urban locations for wedding party photographs. We spent the majority of our time in a parking garage in Gastown and in a colourfully-painted alley beside it. Tomasz made us feel so comfortable that we often forgot he was there. That, together with his creativity and incredible eye, means our photos are candid, unique and almost editorial."

"In terms of the ceremony and reception, I was very attached to having equal representation from our parents, given weddings so often showcase fathers over mothers. Rasmus walked down the aisle with his mother, my brother walked down the aisle with my mother and both of our mothers did speeches. We did other things to keep the atmosphere fun and light: we had lawn games, a photo booth, an Earnest Ice Cream cart instead of cake, and no grand entrance into the reception. We mixed Swedish and Canadian traditions, seating couples across the table from each other, and friends and family from across the world together. We did speeches 'Swedish-style', in that anyone could give a short speech, and we had 13 in total, meaning that so many different parts of our lives were represented."

"The whole day was planned around maximizing time with family and friends, bringing people together, minimizing traditional wedding customs, and having the most fun possible. This is all I can advise to couples in the planning stages: forget the small details, leave any stress behind and focus on enjoying the day to its fullest, because it goes by so quickly. It is a once in a lifetime experience to have all of your loved ones come together to celebrate you."
