A blush-and-burgundy palette with bountiful florals transitioned Jessica Cheng and Phil Chou's lush wedding from outdoors to in

It’s safe to say that destiny brought Jessica Cheng and Phil Chou together. They first met in music class at Lord Byng Secondary School in Vancouver at just 13 and 14, respectively. “We didn’t really like each other,” says Phil, laughing. “We started talking a little more in senior year,” he says. Jessica pursued Phil, finally resulting in a date. And the rest was history.

Phil proposed in Paris, fulfilling a dream to get down on one knee in the city of love. The couple started planning their summer wedding and easily settled on VanDusen Botanical Gardens. “When we were in high school, we used to sneak into the Gardens and run through the maze,” Jessica says. “We knew we wanted to get married there because it’s outdoors and holds so many memories.”

The couple wanted a playful and unique event that would showcase their fun-filled personalities and they credit their wedding planner and designer Corinne Schelle from Filosophi Event Planning for bringing that vision to life. The modern and earthy afternoon ceremony featured décor in soft, blush tones—perfect for a warm, summer day. The garden theme was carried through to the evening reception, where the newlyweds participated in a traditional tea ceremony during cocktail hour. They joined their guests to play oversized games, dine, dance and then dine some more at a late-night taco stand.

Jessica looked stunning in a Berta gown from Blush Bridal, featuring intricate lace and beading detail. Phil wore a deep wine-coloured custom suit by Alison Hartford from Manuel Mendoza Couture.

Our Little Flower Company created elegant floral arrangements in blush and white, with deep burgundy accents for the wedding party and table décor. They also arranged the unique, feathery pampas grass ceremony backdrop.

Jessica designed her bridesmaid’s dresses in collaboration with Alison Hartford from Manuel Mendoza Couture; the sage and gold knee-length dresses were all slightly different. The groomsmen wore navy suits from The Tux Store.

The Vancouver Convention Centre’s floor-to-ceiling windows and oceanfront setting help bring the outside in. Vintage furniture, pink drapes and blush tablecloths from Cahoots Creative kept the atmosphere airy, while elegant gold candles added richness to the hanging greenery and lush floral centrepieces by Our Little Flower Company.

A. Elizabeth Cakes made the three-tier cake, featuring rustic gold accents and blush-toned flowers that highlighted the garden theme. The gold and burgundy stationery suite by Love by Phoebe incorporated the couple’s monogram (Phil loves Jessica), which was mirrored again on the cake.

Jessica’s timeless look with a low bun and fresh, natural makeup was achieved by Nadia Albano Style Inc.

A confetti cannon from FireWX showered the couple with hundreds of rose petals as the couple sealed their union with a kiss. Life Studios inc captured Jessica and Phil’s day, including their journey with the wedding party on a Vancouver Trolley Company trolley.

Live music by Side One entertained guests and Phil surprised Jessica by playing “Runaway” by Kanye West on a giant keyboard. At the reception, guests were kept refreshed with popsicles from Johnny Pops.
