Sami and Kelvin pay homage to their romantic history at a sophisticated Hart House wedding

"We first met just shy of 10 years before our wedding day, up at the Burnaby campus of Simon Fraser University. We had just started our first year of university classes and happened to be enrolled in all the same classes," explains Sami, the bride. "We don't know who noticed who first but, once we started chatting, the sparks flew. MSN conversations, late night phone calls and random texts, soon led to us becoming boyfriend and girlfriend. Fast forward almost a decade, two years of which were long-distance dating, and a lot of growing up together. Kelvin popped the question in February 2014 on a foggy and rainy evening up at SFU (Classic Burnaby Mountain weather!), the place where it all started. And, of course, the answer was yes!"

"The wedding day was everything we dreamed of and more. We chose Hart House Restaurant for its beautiful location and amazing catering. It was fitting that we met in Burnaby, lived in Burnaby and then celebrated our union in Burnaby."

"We started planning well in advance and had everything lined up pretty quickly. The long engagement gave us the chance to sit back and relax as the big day drew closer. To give you an idea, we met with our photographers, Christie and Kin of White Dahlia Studios, about two years before the day! It helped too that the sales manager/coordinator at Hart House, Sonja, made our day even better by making sure everything with vendors ran smoothly and was timed perfectly."

"For our style and inspiration, we wanted to keep things simple and elegant. We knew the venue and guests would make the day shine so the decor was an added bonus. We were lucky the weather was on our side and were able to have our ceremony outdoors with the glistening Deer Lake as the backdrop. Having such beautiful scenery meant we didn't have to spend too much on the 'wow' factor. With our budget in mind, Sandy at Art of the Party helped us to achieve our desired look with charming decor rentals. We had simple bouquets of deep reds contrasted with soft whites. The florists at Granville Island Florists did a great job arranging the settings."

"Finally, we were very lucky to have our incredible friends and family make the day even better. For example, our hairstylists were friends from Salon Haze, Loretta Tom and Tim Kuo. We certainly couldn't have asked for a better bridal party too. They stepped up when we needed helping hands. All-in-all, it was a day with our nearest and dearest joining us for a big party. Our tip for future brides and grooms: if you have the luxury of time, plan early. And, most importantly, be as present as possible 'cause the day will fly by!"
