Forget the all-white tiered wedding cake — break the mould with these B.C.–based bakers' imaginative interpretations of the celebratory dessert, which are custom-made to mimic everything from shimmering agate to fanciful, floral-filled gardens.
Rain Bake Shop
Whether it’s agate, an unconventional theme of black and gold or, hell, even an iconic Disney villain, Rain Bake Shop has a knack for transforming even the most offbeat themes and ideas into gorgeous, drool-worthy cakes. Pick from flavours like Earl grey, chocolate and orange zest, and fillings like raspberry, salted caramel and rose. Prices range from $6 to $15 per slice, depending on the complexity of the design.
The Cake and the Giraffe
With flavours like salted caramel pineapple, the French Canadian (think maple buttercream and bacon bits) and peanut butter and jelly, the Cake and the Giraffe’s desserts taste as playful as they look. Not into the idea of a towering cake? Dalana Fleming, the Vancouver-based baker behind the biz, makes cupcakes, too. Prices range from $9 to $18 per slice, depending on the design.
A. Elizabeth Cakes
Does your dream wedding cake include a whimsical fondant replica of the gazebo you and your partner got engaged under? Or maybe you’re envisioning a tasteful multi-tiered cake adorned with edible replicas of prescription forms? (Because you and your partner are, duh, doctors.) Vancouver-based baker Anna Elizabeth Wawzonek can make it (and has made it) happen. Prices start at $9 a slice for custom designs, and $500 a cake from A. Elizabeth’s pre-designed Classics collection.
Mooch by Megan
Specializing in Italian buttercream, local baker Megan Sanderson of Mooch by Megan crafts cakes that are straightforward in design, elegant in execution and packed with flavour. We’re especially fond of her watercolour and marble cakes — accented with hand-painted gold leaf — which add an artful element to receptions. Prices start at $4 a slice.
Momo Chen Cakes
Richmond-based artist Momo Chen’s cakes run the gamut from artful and architectural to delicate and regal, so you can trust she’ll bring your vision to life — whatever it may be. Each of her designs is one-of-a-kind and may take up to several weeks to complete. Prices start at $450 for a two-tier cake that serves 36 guests and to $1,300 for a six-tier cake that serves 180.
