Cleanse, tone, moisturize. That was the mantra given to me at age 16 and I’ve rarely strayed from it. I’d always seen facials as a bit of a luxurious treat at the spa, so I was thrilled to have a chance to try the anti-aging HydraFacial treatment, which promises to brighten and tighten your skin without surgery, or even any discomfort or downtime.

Located in the charmingly named Leg-in-Boot Square near Granville Island, the newly reopened False Creek Skin Solution Clinic offers the HydraFacial as a one-hour treatment. Inside, Natasa Glogovac, the clinic’s new owner and director (shown above), greeted me and showed me to the treatment room. Glogovac is a European-trained plastic surgeon, but since moving to Canada she’s found her passion in the non-surgical route to treating skin problems.

After she’d thoroughly cleaned away any traces of makeup, my face was ready to be treated. The HydraFacial is a four-step treatment that uses a disposable tip, ensuring a fresh tip is used for each client rather than cleaning and reusing the same brushes.

The facial begins with a lymphatic suction that opens the pores to prep the skin. Then an acid peel is applied to loosen dirt and debris from pores. Each step is applied with light strokes upwards from the chin and around the face. With every sweep of the textured tip, you can feel its exfoliating power. Glogovac then applied an LED pad to tighten and brighten the surface of my skin. The whole treatment felt so relaxing, I think I nearly drifted off to sleep!

Once all the treatments were completed, I could immediately see the results of the deep cleansing the HydraFacial promised. My face glowed, felt smoother and I noticed hardly any redness. A little bit of mineral powder makeup and I was good to go. Glogovac recommends three to five sessions as the perfect prep for a special event — such as your wedding day, of course. To maintain healthy skin, she also suggests treating the facial as a regular part of your overall care, like getting your hair cut regularly or seeing the dentist for a cleaning. I’ve learned that it’s never too late to discover the benefits of a facial. Now my new mantra is go for the glow!

HydraFacial treatments start at $129 at False Creek Skin Solution Clinic. Want to know more about how the HydraFacial works? Check out the video above.
