Can Facebook stalking lead to love? It worked in the case of Valentina and Glen Kim, who had first met through a mutual friend. Afterwards, says Valentina, Glen stalked her on Facebook, relentlessly asking her out until she finally agreed to a study date at a local coffee shop. The two have been inseparable ever since.
In February 2012, the pair were on a trip to Kona, Hawaii, along with Valentina’s family, when Glen arranged for a yacht ride for just the two of them On the yacht, he pulled out a tiny black box from his pocket and popped the question to a shocked but very happy Valentina.
A little more than a year later, the bride-to-be woke up to a perfect sunny Vancouver day in her room at the Westin Bayshore and began to get ready for their first look — and first dance before the ceremony. Valentina remembers being “uncomprehendingly happy” to see her future husband: “And by the look on his face, I knew he was too.” Knowing Glen isn’t much for dancing in front of a crowd, as a special surprise, Valentina had arranged for Edmonton singer-songwriter Daniela Andrade to strum “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison for their first (and private) dance.
Following their photo session with photographers Dallas and Sabrina Kolotylo, it was time to make it all official, in a sweet ceremony at Blue Water Café in Yaletown. Valentina remembers beaming the entire time. “I think it was because the room was filled with all the important people in our lives that came from Edmonton and Calgary mostly, to watch us tie the knot.”
She also remembers Glen’s lovely vows vividly: “I obviously knew he loved me, but to hear the way he said the vows and the words he chose to say to me blew me away."
Following more photos with family, dinner was served and guests were treated to seafood towers with fresh “everything,” says Valentina. The main course featured Arctic char, sablefish or beef tenderloin, and the meal finished with a custom cake made by the Blue Water’s pastry chef.
Throughout the evening, family members made some entertaining toasts, with Valentina’s sister and maid of honour, Michelle, delivering the night’s tearjerker. “We ended the night with Daniela playing until the end and wrapped up the evening with thank you’s and goodbyes, with no shortage of hugs and kisses to spread around," says Valentina.
"If I could have that day back, I would do it exactly the way it happened."
