What could be more fun than a picnic with family and friends? To celebrate their wedding, Vancouver’s Mavis Lui and Edmond Kwai chose a “glorified backyard picnic party” at Burnaby’s historic Hart House Restaurant on Deer Lake. Following an outdoor ceremony in the Hart House gardens, the fun moved indoors to the restaurant’s Lakeside Cottage. The DIY couple put together their own decorations for the reception to create what they call “a happy homey feel” by choosing soft colours, fabrics and natural materials for their paper lanterns, flower pom-poms, bunting and mason-jar centrepieces. Upon arrival, each guest was handed a “wedding kit,” a linen bag containing bubbles, bells, a cookie and a personalized button to wear. Mavis and Edmond also assembled tiny wooden picnic baskets of candies to serve as both place cards and favours. Their friends also contributed to the day, providing homemade cupcakes, creating a short film about the couple and playing the ceremony music, while one friend even officiated the ceremony. “We imagined a day full of love and happiness for our wedding day,” say Mavis and Ed. “Looking back, that’s just what we got; the Hart House Cottage was brimming with love that night.”
