“When I was a little girl,” says Jillian Ma, “I’ve always believed that someday my prince would come, a new pair of shoes would change my life and then we would live happily ever after.” And aside from the shoes, her dream became reality when she met Carlo Yau during a visit to her bank and wound up chatting with him for an entire hour. Jillian had found her prince.
A huge fan of Disney World, Jillian says she always knew she wanted to be proposed to at Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Sure enough, Carlo picked a magical moment in front of the castle, just before the fireworks lit up, to pop the question.
Naturally, a touch of Disney would need to be a part of their wedding, but Jillian and Carlo wound up with an entire modern Disney princess theme, complete with crystals, rhinestones, feathers and tree branches. Among the Disney touches were mouse ears for the flower girl and ring bearer, Cinderella and Prince Charming Mickey dolls at the guest sign-in table, a Disney photo frame for their engagement photos, and even a Cinderella pillow with a glass slipper on it, carried down the aisle by their ring bearer.
For their big day, they welcomed about 220 guests, including many who flew in from as far away as Hong Kong, Australia, Ontario and Alberta. In addition to the large guest list, Jillian and Carlo had a huge bridal party of 16. To transport the group from place to place, the couple rented a big yellow school bus – “it was our version of the Cinderella carriage” – plus a second bus to transport guests from their hotel to the ceremony and reception at Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club.
To add even more personal touches to their day, Jillian involved her talented friends in contributing music. Her friend Bailey sang John Legend’s “All of Me” as Jillian made her walk down the aisle, as well as the couple’s first-dance song, “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” At the end of the night, Jillian’s best friend Kim performed Bruno Mars’s “Count on Me.”
“The best gifts are things that money can’t buy and I will forever value and treasure how their beautiful voices made my wedding night that much better,” says Jillian. She and Carlo continued to dance the night away with all their friends before winding up with a group sing-along.
“I moved to Vancouver four years ago and this is the first time all my friends and family could get together in a long time,” explains Jillian. “It was not only a celebration of the love Carlo and I had for each other, but also the celebration of love and appreciation we had for our friends and family.”
