They dated for 10 years before Thach surprised Marilyn on her 31st birthday in Los Cabos with a proposal in front of their close friends. Marilyn laughs that she didn’t even say yes; she just grabbed the beautiful ring from Thach’s hand and slipped it onto her finger!

Having waited so long, the two settled on holding two separate wedding receptions. One was held in Calgary, Marilyn’s hometown, and was a “proper” traditional Chinese ceremony. The second was a Richmond wedding, at the Riverside Grand Ballroom — and it was a party to remember.

Marilyn recalls the day starting out with her feeling “overwhelmed with joy and excitement,” as she and Thach exchanged sweet text messages while each was getting ready.

The couple spoiled their guests with fresh sushi, oysters and even lychee mojitos. Their main priority was to get everyone on their feet and dancing to the live band, which was exactly what happened.

“Our wedding day was everything I wanted and more,” says Marilyn. “Heart-felt speeches brought tears to my eyes. I was given a striptease from my husband which I thought was so adorable. Although he was a little embarrassed after the fact.”

The night ended with chocolate fondue, cannoli and candied bacon made by Thach himself. Best of all, says Marilyn, guests came up to shower her with praise because of the great time they were having. “I really wish we can do it again — the day went by way too fast,” she says. “It was the most perfect, magical day.” Photographer: Jelger & Tanja Photography | Venue: Riverside Grand Ballroom | Bride’s Dress: Mori Lee, from Heavenly Bridal | Bridesmaid Dresses: | Hair & Makeup: Ann Dang | Groom’s Outfit: Hugo Boss, from Harry Rosen | Groomsmen Outfits: Express | Catering: Satori Factory | Cake: The Cake and The Giraffe | Jewellery: Etsy | Music: Famous Players Band
