Callie Haugen freely confesses that ever since she was a little girl, she dreamed of the day she would say "I do." She could already picture what the wedding would look like, and who would be waiting at the end of the aisle for her. So, Callie obviously had plenty of ideas when it came time to marry Dave, her best friend and true love, and she ambitiously planned the entire wedding herself (aside from wisely booking professional day-of help). Callie's vision was for a fun rustic-chic look — she had her bridesmaids choose their own mismatched cream dresses, while the guys wore jeans and ties paired with smart tweed vests. She planned for plenty of homemade touches, including jars of red pepper jelly as wedding favours and a pretty wedding cake made by her own aunt. Well in advance, Callie booked Saar Bank Farms in Abbotsford for its fresh country setting, but two weeks before the big day, the venue called to say they could no longer allow access inside the barn — where the reception was to be held. After the initial panic, the resourceful bride quickly switched gears and arranged for an entirely outdoor wedding, from a warm and intimate ceremony under blue skies, to a celebratory barbecue feast as the sun set, followed by a night of dancing under the stars. The day was perfect, says Callie, even after she received two bee stings (on her ring finger, no less) just 25 minutes before the ceremony. "We had to laugh," she says, "because no matter how hard I tried to make things perfect, the universe was still there to show me that we cannot control everything and to just be in the moment."
