Victoria's Heather McFarland and Zay Hamilton decided to tie the knot over the Easter long weekend, and for good reason. Their plan was to gather their friends and family for a relaxing weekend at a "summer" camp on the Sunshine Coast, giving the couple a chance to spend days with their favourite people instead of being limited to one whirlwind evening. Most guests arrived on the Friday afternoon at Camp Elphinstone near Gibsons to stay in the property's cabins until Sunday afternoon. Guests had access to all the usual fun summer camp activities (like archery and kayaking) and all meals were provided in the dining hall throughout the weekend, giving everyone the full camp experience. The rehearsal dinner on Friday included every guest and was followed by a huge sing-song campfire on the ocean's edge. On Saturday, Heather and Zay put on their elegant wedding-day finery — in fun contrast to their rustic surroundings — and held their outdoor ceremony on the camp property, saying their vows before guests assembled on camp benches, before celebrating over a special dinner in the dining hall. In addition to one main cake from Rebar Restaurant, the couple's mothers had baked a decadent wedding cake for each table, which was a real hit with guests. The highlight of the night, however, was the dance in the camp's recreation hall, where old canoes hung from the rafters and a fire blazed in the big stone fireplace. With guests even lending a hand in setting up decorations, this was no typical destination wedding. In the end, says Heather, it truly felt like a community affair.
