Jillian Land and J.J. Montemayor dated for nine years before tying the knot last September at Swaneset Bay Resort & Country Club in Pitt Meadows. As J.J. had been an RCMP officer for seven years at that point, the couple naturally chose to have a traditional RCMP red serge wedding. J.J. dressed in ceremonial red serge while his six honour guards wore the traditional serge with brown boots, breeches and Stetson. The couple even found a tiny serge uniform for their four-year-old nephew who acted as ring bearer.
Jillian and J.J. lucked out with a beautiful sunny day and were able to marry outside on Swaneset’s Birch Terrace. Jillian made the long walk down the aisle accompanied by a string trio playing Pachebel’s Canon. In honour of J.J.’s background, the ceremony included a few Filipino traditions, such as the lasso, a rope placed around the couple’s heads in a figure eight to symbolize the infinite nature of their marriage and the lifetime bond they are entering. The couple then performed the arras ceremony where coins were placed in their hands to represent future fidelity and wealth.
At the end of the ceremony, bride and groom walked underneath an arch of lances held by the honour guards. The bridal party then went off to a photo session around the golf course while guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the grand ballroom.
While Swaneset catered the wedding feast, including a seafood buffet and dessert buffet complete with a chocolate fountain, Jillian made her own wedding cake as well as cookie favours for every guest.
The party continued with a rather unusual garter toss. To the tune of “Bad Boys,” J.J. gave Jillian a full police pat-down before removing her garter. The wedding also followed the Filipino tradition of the "money dance,” where all the men lined up to dance with the bride, and the women lined up to dance with the groom, and pinned money onto the newlyweds’ garments during each quick dance.
It wasn’t a conventional wedding by any means, but by blending traditions and bringing out their own personalities, Jillian and J.J. created a special day that they and their guests will remember for years to come.
