Qually and James now live in Hong Kong but met years ago in Vancouver, as Qually was finishing her degree and James was just starting his. Five years of a long-distance romance followed, until they were finally reunited two years ago. Their travel themed Vancouver wedding grew out of these long years apart, and the rare trips when they were happily able to spend time together.

The couple had always loved Vancouver, so it seemed only natural to hold their wedding where they had both grown up and met. From their home in Hong Kong, they managed to plan their wedding day almost entirely online, thanks to the help of friends and family. They booked the Chapel at Queen Elizabeth Park for their ceremony by email, met their officiant over FaceTime and first saw their reception venue, the SFU Diamond Alumni Centre, on YouTube.

As a couple just starting out, Qually and James worried that hosting an overseas wedding would be expensive. So, from the bouquets and centrepieces, to the invitations and wedding favours, down to details like the bridesmaids’ necklaces and groomsmen’s cufflinks, anything they could make or design themselves, they did. And the lovely results speak for themselves.
