What You Need to Know About Natural Lash Extensions

Brides seeking that ‘I just woke up like this’ beauty vibe for their wedding day will love the idea of natural lash extensions. But if you want to forego mascara, here’s what you need to know about incorporating extensions into your bridal beauty routine.

How are eyelash extensions applied?
Eyelashes are applied one at a time. You must keep your eyes closed during the process but soft tape is applied to help keep your eyelids and natural lashes in place. Each lash (usually synthetic mink) is glued along the natural lash line. Since they are applied individually, estheticians have a lot of control of the overall look achieved through lash extensions.

What looks can you achieve with natural lash extensions?
A full set of dark, long, curled lashes can certainly give you a dramatic Kardashian-esque look, but if you prefer a lighter, more natural look, opt to only apply a half set in a lighter shade of brown. Eyes by MJ will often apply multiple lash styles (including a variety of colours and thicknesses) into a single sitting, so that even full lashes look like their homegrown.

How long does it take to apply a set a lashes?
A full application of eyelash extensions includes between 100 to 150 lashes per eye. This can take up to two hours to apply. If you’re stopping in for a fill, expect the appointment to closer to an hour.

What are the lashes made of?
Most lash extensions are a synthetic that resembles mink, but human hair lashes are available, just ask ahead to find out if your local studio offers them. As synthetic materials become more sophisticated, the verdict is still out about which material is more natural looking.

When should I apply my lash extensions?
If you plan to wear lash extensions and avoid mascara on your wedding day, get a trial set at least a couple of months before your big day. Some people may have a reaction to the glue adhesive, resulting in red, puffy eyes. A trial will get any of those kinks out of the way. Once you know you’re in the clear, a fill the day of your wedding will have your lashes looking their best.

How long do the lashes last and when should I book a follow-up appointment?
The lashes typically last for about three weeks and fall out just as your natural lashes do. Eyes by MJ suggests booking a fill within a month of your first application. A fill is just a portion of the cost, so upkeep won’t burn a hole in your wallet.

How much do natural lash extensions cost?
A full set of synthetic mink extensions typically cost about $120. Studios also offer half sets and fills. A fill costs about $60.

What do I need to know about eyelash care?
You shouldn’t let the lashes get wet for at least four hours following application. If possible, avoid wetting them for a full 24 hours. After that window, you can apply makeup and wash your face as you regularly would. If you are applying mascara in addition to the lashes, use a light hand and only brush the tips of your lashes. If the eyelashes ever look askew, simply roll a clean and dry mascara brush from the base of your upper eyelid, curling up and out.
