Rebecca Kleinman and Chase Conway had been friends for eight years, but only a couple for six months when Chase popped the question. Their two-year engagement meant plenty of time for friends and family to help with planning the Whistler wedding and several DIY projects along the way.
Rebecca and Chase wanted a day where everyone they loved could help them start off their married life together in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, with a touch of elegance. All the friends, family and vendors involved in the wedding were close to the couple in some way. “We just wanted it to be less about tradition and what you should do and more about what spoke to us as a couple since we see a wedding as being such a personal and intimate day,” explains Rebecca.
It poured rain on their September wedding day, so the ceremony had to be moved indoors at Whistler’s Edgewater Lodge. While the couple was unable to use the chuppah as planned, they managed to retain a Jewish element with Chase breaking the glass at the ceremony. Despite the wet weather, the couple headed outdoors for photos, finding hunter boots for all the bridesmaids, who had chosen their own dresses and colours, ranging from autumn gold to crimson.
Instead of a traditional dinner, Rebecca and Chase hosted a cocktail reception and broke the speeches up to take place throughout the night for a more informal celebration. After cocktails, the couple and their guests headed to local watering hole Merlin’s Bar & Grill, which they had rented out and decorated in advance, so the party could get rolling. They had a friend play DJ, and since it was Whistler Wedding Planners’ 1,000th wedding, the planner had arranged a special surprise. To greet guests as they arrived, she had hired a “champagne girl” to wear a dress made up of champagne glasses in the skirt, in the couple’s own fall wedding colours.
Guests enjoyed more cocktail nibbles and danced the night away with an open invitation for any friends to join the reception until 2 a.m. “It was a night we will never forget,” says Rebecca.
